Expertise and public trust

Consider the following comments and write a response to one or more of them in whatever form you choose. Your writing will be judged on the quality of your response to the theme, how well you organise and present your point of view, and how effectively you express yourself. You will not be judged on the views you hold.

  1. A society that stops trusting its experts will soon find itself trusting its loudest voices instead.
    —
  2. Expertise is a claim to be obeyed, dressed up as a claim to be believed.
    —
  3. Every expert was once wrong in public, and the good ones say so.
    —
  4. The question is not whether to trust experts but how to tell which ones have earned it.

What worked

  • A clear position in the first paragraph: freedom depends on the law that limits it.
  • Mill’s idea of pursuing your own good “in your own way” is used as a genuine turning point, not just quoted.
  • Varied sentence length keeps a dense argument readable.

What to work on

  • Your second example (school uniforms) is too slight for the claim it supports. Choose one with real stakes.
  • The conclusion restates the introduction. Push the idea one step further.
  • Several sentences run on. Split them where you reach for “which”.
